COCAMS/NWA Spring 2009 Contest

April Weather / Climate Predictions

Flex your forecasting muscles for Oklahoma's most tumultuous month!

The spring 2009 COCAMS/NWA forecast contest has three components. For the Oklahoma Mesonet station near El Reno (ELRE), predict:

  1. The month's rainfall total (RAIN)
  2. The month's heating degree-day total (HDD), and
  3. The distance to the nearest April tornado (DIST)

Prizes will be awarded for all three categories.

Notes:

  • The contest is open only to members and officers of COCAMS/NWA and OUSCAMS.
  • The RAIN and HDD totals will be defined as those reported by the Oklahoma Mesonet "Mesonet Climatological Data" publication. (more info).
  • Heating Degree-Day defined here. Climatological information for El Reno coming soon.
  • Winning predictions need not be exact, but merely the closest [in an absolute value sense] to the observed value.
  • The nearest tornado will be selected from those which occur during the month of April 2009 (CDT) and are documented in the National Weather Service publication, Storm Data. The begining location will determine the point of measurement.
  • Awards may be based upon a preliminary local storm report, prior to the publication of Storm Data, only if the occurrence of the nearest tornado is unambiguous.
  • Tiebreakers: for RAIN: HDD then DIST; for HDD: RAIN then DIST; for DIST: RAIN then HDD.
  • The winners will be announced at the May 2009, meeting of COCAMS/NWA.
  • Limit one entry per person.

Please submit entries in writing or via email by 11 PM CST, March 15th, 2009 to the COCAMS/NWA Secretary:
